It is built on the foundations of the old mosque. Once James I conquered the city, he consecrated the mosque to Christian worship, dedicated to Saint Mary. It had to undergo a remodeling, due to the deterioration in which it was found, and it was rebuilt in Gothic-Renaissance style, although the current building is baroque, from the 17th century, a period in which it underwent the last changes. The main façade is in the baroque style, profusely decorated and of great beauty. The door of San Agatángelo receives this name from a sculpture by Bussi with the image of this saint, which is at the top. The Communion chapel is neoclassical in style.
